How
does low vision affect people’s
lives?
Low vision has a dramatic impact on lives. Those afflicted with low vision
sometimes become depressed, anxious, confused or afraid. People with low vision
can be more prone to accidents due to their visual limitations with depth perception. Causes
of Low Vision
Macular degeneration is the most common cause of low-vision, although many
other conditions can result in low vision. Some of these include glaucoma,
in-operable cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.
The
Low Vision Exam
The
optometrist has been uniquely trained to understand
the needs of the patients with low vision. He will
perform an extensive evaluation to determine the
level of vision impairment and discuss the individual’s vision problems. It’s
a good idea to bring something that you want to see or read with you to the
evaluation. The doctor may prescribe various treatment options, including
low vision devices and aides which will assist the
patient to use his sight to the best possible advantage. Treatment

There are many vision aids and devices available for low vision; the doctor will
make recommendations on which is best for you. Low vision aids may include optical
lenses such as magnifiers (hand-held, stand and illuminated magnifiers and telescopes).
