How does low vision affect people’s lives?

Low vision has a dramatic impact on lives. Those afflicted with low vision sometimes become depressed, anxious, confused or afraid. People with low vision can be more prone to accidents due to their visual limitations with depth perception.

Causes of Low Vision

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of low-vision, although many other conditions can result in low vision. Some of these include glaucoma, in-operable cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.

The Low Vision Exam

The optometrist has been uniquely trained to understand the needs of the patients with low vision. He will perform an extensive evaluation to determine the level of vision impairment and discuss the individual’s vision problems. It’s a good idea to bring something that you want to see or read with you to the evaluation. The doctor may prescribe various treatment options, including low vision devices and aides which will assist the patient to use his sight to the best possible advantage.

Treatment Options for Low Vision: Devices and Aids

There are many vision aids and devices available for low vision; the doctor will make recommendations on which is best for you. Low vision aids may include optical lenses such as magnifiers (hand-held, stand and illuminated magnifiers and telescopes). Devices that attach to a television or computer screen are also available.
